EXPLOSION DANGER FROM BED LINERS

Plastic bedlines that are used in the beds of pickup trucks can be the cause of dangerous explosions if gas containers are filled inside the bed. Chevron USA reports that the insulating effect of the plastic liners prevents the static charge generated by gasoline flowing into a metal can from grounding. As the charge builds, it can create a static spark between the can and the gas nozzle causing the fumes to ignite.

Reports indicate that 23 deaths and/or injuries have occured from gas containers being fueled while still in the bed of pickups with plastic bed liners. Although some technical bulletins recommend placing a rubber mat under the liner, there have been several reports of explosions even when the mats were in place.

A Ford Motor Company technical bulletin states that gas cans should never be filled inside the bed of a pickup with a bed liner in it. The can should be removed from the bed of the pickup and placed on the ground.

With the increased popularity of pickups, particularly pickups with convenience/customized features such as bed liners, everyone should be aware of this hazard.
